Take a trip Inside the Cidery with Lookout Farm

Here at Boston Boot Company, we’re no strangers to the pleasure of a cold, crafted brew. Recently, however, we got to visit the cidery at Lookout Farm in Natick, MA, just a quick drive from the city. Suddenly, we’re thirsty for craft cider.

Springtime at Lookout Farm means over 180 acres of fruit trees in full bloom.

“My family bought the farm to share this experience with everybody. It’s great to see people get energized and realize how wonderful nature can be.”

With over 180 acres of fruit trees, Lookout Farm is the type of place families come to for apple-picking and hayrides. “It’s great to see people get energized and realize how wonderful nature can be,” says Jay Mofenson. “That’s why my family bought the farm, to share this experience with everybody.”

There’s no typical day at the farm, says Jay, who logs some serious mileage between the brewery and the fields. “These boots pass the farm test. No blisters, comfortable, stylish—They’re solid.”

Recently, Jay had a vision to try something new with the apples grown on his farm. He and brewmaster Aaron Mateychuk began a painstakingly slow process of brewing, tasting, and perfecting a hard cider that is distinctive rather than sweet. When your farm has been operating since 1651, there’s no rushing your craft.

“During the brewing process I taste the cider, take notes, think about it,” says Jay. “We don’t rush any decisions here. We’ll play with different ideas and bounce ideas off other brewers.”

“We don’t take any shortcuts,” says Jay. “Craft consumers are intelligent. They appreciate a good product.”

For Jay, this commitment to quality and local sources—right down to the packaging—is a no-brainer. All of the fruit, honey, and spices that go into his recipes are the finest New England ingredients he can find. If it all takes a little longer, Jay is OK with that.

Lookout Farm is one of the oldest continuously operating farms in the United States. They’ve been at it since 1651.

“It’s about commitment to detail and commitment to making a quality product. A lot of people in every industry just pump out product so they can sell it to you. They want to say it’s great but is it really great? That’s for the consumer to decide.”
